Geography and tourism unit

The Geography and Tourism unit is a research platform for teachers and other personel in geography and tourism.

Research at the unit is divided into numerous specialities, but the common focus of both geography and tourism is on the interaction between nature and societies.

The ever-growing emphasis on environmental issues and sustainability requires a broad approach to find solutions to deal with urgent matters for the future.

Bridges are built between social science, humanities and natural science, within the both disciplines, in order to obtain the broadest picture of changes regarding both the environment and society. Data analyses of spatial information play vital part in this process.

Tourism has become a large-scale industry in Iceland and plays an important role in the politics of land use and planning. Thus the interaction of the industry with other aspects of society, nature and culture is one of the main topics of tourism.
